Nj criminal background check: where to start

For a New Jersey criminal background check, follow the State Police procedure that matches the requesting agency’s purpose. A personal FBI summary and a court case search are separate products; neither automatically satisfies that agency’s required check.

Use the New Jersey state-history product for that layer and keep any federal fingerprint or court research separate when the task requires it.

For your own New Jersey history, use the fingerprint-based NJSP Personal Record Request route. NJSP provides this state-only record to New Jersey residents requesting their own history; it does not add federal or other-state records.

Use IdentoGO’s New Jersey enrollment instructions and obtain the service code for your actual personal-request purpose from NJSP before scheduling. Bring the accepted identification required by the appointment instructions, including the matching home address. If outside New Jersey, consult the linked IdentoGO cardscan/out-of-state instructions for the applicable route. Confirm the charge for that exact service and location before paying; do not use the Form 212A charge as the fingerprint-service total.

After personal-request fingerprinting, the NJSP results portal uses the IdentoGO PCN/TCN, last name and birth date. A no-record letter is downloadable after allowing two business days and remains available for 90 days from fingerprinting; record-found responses are mailed, with up to 14 business days allowed. Notarized letters are outside that download service.

Check the purpose before ordering

New Jersey agency checks can require a prescribed request route. Do not replace that route with the FBI personal-summary service, which is intended for reviewing or correcting your own history rather than employment or licensing.

Let the licensing purpose determine the request

If the licensing agency directs you to Form 212A, obtain its ORI before starting. The portal says to consult the responsible police department or state agency first; an incorrect ORI can prevent processing. Do not choose an unrelated service simply because its label says background check.

Form 212A cannot be used for a personal background check. Its $20 submission charge applies to that agency-directed form, and the CHRI goes to the police department or state agency, not to you. This is separate from a personal fingerprint request and its charge.
